At Regina RMT, our therapists are trained to effectively treat conditions involving myofascial pain by targeting specific “trigger points” within the muscle tissue to reduce tension and discomfort. Identifying these trigger points can be challenging, which is why we often use myofascial release techniques across larger areas of tissue. This method, commonly utilized by chiropractors and other healthcare providers, helps address muscle tightness and promotes relaxation.
During a session, the therapist will gently palpate the affected area, assessing the texture of the fascia. If the tissue feels soft and pliable, it’s a sign of healthy fascia, while tight, rigid areas indicate spots of concern. The therapist will focus on these tight regions, often relieving tension before moving on to other areas. Interestingly, the discomfort you feel may not always be directly over the problematic area, as tension can radiate to different parts of the body. By working on multiple muscle groups, we aim to release trigger points and reduce pain throughout the body.
Myofascial release therapy is particularly beneficial for individuals with chronic pain conditions, such as tension headaches (which can be alleviated by targeting neck muscles) or discomfort caused by poor circulation, such as blood pooling in the lower legs.
However, like any therapeutic treatment, myofascial release is not suitable for everyone. We do not recommend this technique for individuals with:
- Open wounds or burns
- Recent fractures or weakened bones
- Deep vein conditions, such as thrombosis
It’s also not advisable for those taking blood-thinning medications due to the increased risk of complications such as internal bleeding or nerve damage, although these side effects are rare.
While many studies have looked into the benefits of massage therapy, only a few have specifically examined myofascial release. As a result, some healthcare professionals may be less familiar with this technique and may recommend traditional massage therapy instead.
If you believe myofascial release could help with your condition, we encourage you to discuss it with your physician. At Regina RMT, we are always happy to collaborate with healthcare providers to determine the best treatment plan for your needs. We provide educational resources and will discuss any potential risks or side effects with you and your doctor.
Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions or would like to explore how myofascial release, or any other therapy we offer, can support your recovery. We’re happy to discuss the benefits, answer any concerns, or help you schedule a consultation.
