Trigger Point Massage Therapy
Trigger point therapy, developed by Dr. Janet Travell in the 1940s, is a specialized massage technique that targets specific muscles to relieve pain in other areas of the body. Also referred to as myofascial trigger point therapy, this method focuses on applying pressure to tight spots within the muscle, helping to reduce tension and discomfort in both the affected area and surrounding muscles. At Regina RMT, our therapists are trained in this technique to effectively address pain and improve muscle function.
Trigger Point Massage Therapy
Trigger points, often referred to as muscle knots, are localized, tender spots within the muscles that can cause varying levels of discomfort. These points are categorized into two types: active and latent.
Active trigger points cause pain that radiates to other parts of the body, while latent trigger points are only painful when pressed and do not refer pain elsewhere. In some cases, latent trigger points can contribute to reduced mobility and stiffness, particularly in older adults.
These muscle knots are often associated with conditions such as myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia. Unlike acupressure points, which focus on energy pathways, trigger points are actual knots of tense muscle tissue. They can result from factors like repetitive movement, poor posture, or injury.
At Regina RMT, we use targeted trigger point therapy to help reduce pain and discomfort by focusing on these tight muscle areas. While it may take several sessions to fully address the issue, many clients experience significant relief from neuromuscular pain, improved flexibility, reduced swelling, and enhanced muscle function.
During your first session, your Regina RMT therapist will assess the areas of tightness by gently palpating and identifying any trigger points that may be contributing to your discomfort. Since trigger points can be located away from the actual pain site, such as a headache originating from tight muscles in the back, the process may feel different than expected.
Trigger point therapy can also benefit athletes, helping improve flexibility, performance, and posture by reducing muscle tension. While a few sessions may be required to address all trigger points, your therapist may also offer advice on lifestyle changes to help prevent future issues and improve your overall well-being.
